What is Cardiac Rehabilitation?

Cardiac Rehabilitation is a medically-supervised, all-encompassing program designed to assist patients recovering from major heart conditions. The primary goal of Cardiac Rehab is to enhance cardiovascular health, minimize risk factors, and improve overall quality of life by integrating exercise, education, and behavioral support into a comprehensive approach.

Beyond Rehab:
Intensive Cardiac Care for a Healthier Heart

At Heart and Vascular Care, we go beyond standard rehab, offering Intensive Cardiac Rehab with a proven track record for improving heart health and quality of life.

Who Should Consider Cardiac Rehabilitation?

Cardiac Rehab programs can benefit individuals who have: Cardiac Rehabilitation
Had a Heart Attack (within the last 12 months) checkmark
Stable Angina (Chest Pain) checkmark
Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (Stent) checkmark
Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery (CABG) checkmark
Undergone Valve, Heart, or Lung Transplant / Surgery or Replacement checkmark
Heart Failure checkmark

How Common is Cardiac Rehab?

Every year, around 800,000 Americans experience a heart attack, and for 1 in 4 of them, it's not their first. Cardiac rehab significantly reduces the risk of a second heart attack and can lower the chance of death within one to three years after completing the program.

Despite these powerful benefits, only 20% to 30% of eligible patients enroll in cardiac rehab each year.

That's why leading organizations like the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology strongly recommend cardiac rehab for individuals with qualifying heart conditions.

    FAQs About Cardiac Rehabilitation

    01. What should I wear or bring to my ICR sessions?

Safety is our top priority. Please wear closed-toed shoes with heel support—sandals, flip-flops, or footwear without a heel backing (like Crocs or Birkenstocks) are not permitted. Since you’ll be exercising during every session, wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely. You’re welcome to bring items that make your experience more comfortable, such as a sweat towel, water bottle, snacks, or earbuds. If you forget your water, don’t worry—we have hydration stations throughout the clinic.

    02. Can family members participate or attend sessions?

We highly encourage family members, caregivers, and friends to attend educational classes with you! Their involvement can help reinforce healthy habits at home. However, due to limited space and privacy considerations, guests are not allowed in the gym during the exercise portion and will be asked to wait in the lobby.

    03. Do I have to participate in the educational classes? Can I just complete the exercise portion?

As an intensive cardiac rehabilitation (ICR) facility, education is a key component of your recovery. We encourage all patients to participate in the educational classes, as they cover valuable information about nutrition, lifestyle changes, stress management, and heart health.

That said, we understand that some days may not allow for full participation, and we’re happy to accommodate exercise-only sessions as needed. If a patient chooses not to attend educational classes at all, a member of our team may recommend a transfer to a traditional cardiac rehab program, which may be a better fit.

    04. How long does the ICR program last?

Most insurance providers allow up to 36 sessions within an 18-week period. Our typical schedule allows patients to attend 2–3 sessions per week. We encourage patients to complete as many visits as possible to take full advantage of the program’s benefits. While you can discontinue at any time without penalty, re-admission may not be possible unless there is a new qualifying event and referral.

    05. Will I be monitored during exercise?

Yes. As a Phase II cardiac rehabilitation program, your exercise sessions will be closely monitored using a telemetry system—either a chest strap or two-lead necklace. This provides our team with real-time EKG data, allowing us to track how your heart is responding to exercise and make adjustments to your personalized plan as needed to ensure your safety and progress.

    06. Is the program covered by insurance or Medicare?

Yes, our program is covered by most commercial insurance plans, Medicare, and Medicare Advantage. Once your cardiologist places an order, our team will begin the authorization process to determine any applicable co-pays, coverage limits, or exclusions. Please note: Cigna and Humana currently do not cover intensive cardiac rehabilitation. Be sure to review your insurance plan or reach out to our billing team for specific details.

    07. What type of exercises and machines are offered in cardiac rehab?

Our primary focus is on aerobic (cardiovascular) exercise to strengthen your heart in a safe and effective way. Common equipment includes:

    ● Treadmills
    ● Stationary bicycles
    ● Arm cycles
    ● Seated ellipticals

We also offer resistance bands and dumbbells to support light strength training, which may be incorporated based on your needs and goals. While aerobic conditioning is our priority, our rehab team will personalize your program to help you build strength where appropriate.
