Varithena
What is Varithena?
Varithena is a medical treatment for varicose veins. It involves injecting a foamed sclerosing agent called polidocanol into the veins. The foamed medication works by damaging and scarring the inner lining of the vein, causing the vein to collapse and stick together and redirecting blood flow to healthier surrounding veins.
Varithena is administered through a series of injections using ultrasound imaging guidance to ensure proper placement into the varicose veins. It is a simple outpatient procedure that can provide many patients relief from pain and self-consciousness caused by bulging veins.
Benefits of Varithena
- Minimally invasive procedure: Varithena is much less invasive compared to surgical vein stripping or ablation procedures. It involves just injections rather than making large incisions.
- Quick recovery: Most patients can resume normal activities immediately after the Varithena procedure with minimal downtime.
- Outpatient treatment: The injections are done in an outpatient setting, so no hospital stay is required.
- Preserve healthy veins: Varithena targets just the diseased varicose veins while sparing healthy surrounding veins.
- Excellent cosmetic outcome: Collapsing varicose veins improves the visible bulging and discoloration of the veins.
- Repeatable if needed: If some veins remain after the initial treatment, additional Varithena sessions can be performed.
- Fewer complications: Compared to surgery, Varithena has a lower risk of complications like nerve injury, infection, and significant scarring.
What to Expect for Your Varithena Treatment
Before The Procedure
- Once it’s been determined that Varithena is right for you, you’ll need to make an appointment that will last about an hour.
- You may need to avoid certain medications like anti-inflammatories for a period before the procedure.
- Plan to wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows access to the legs.
During The Procedure
- The doctor will numb the area to be treated with local anesthesia.
- A small catheter will be inserted into the vein being treated, and the Varithena foam will be injected into the veins.
- The foam causes the vein to collapse, diverting the blood to nearby, healthier veins.
- Once all the veins are treated, you will put on a compression wrap or stocking.
After The Procedure
- Varithena allows patients to return to light activity on the same day of treatment.
- Compression stockings must be worn for two weeks to support the treated veins and ensure proper healing.
- Heavy exercise must be avoided for one week.
