Who is the ideal candidate?

Foam injection works best on the twisted, ropy varicose veins that are small, medium and large in diameter. It will work on veins that have been unsuccessfully treated with other options, too. If you have an allergy to polidocanol, this treatment option is not for you.

How does it work?

Once it’s been determined that Varithena is right for you, you’ll need to make an appointment for about an hour. The doctor will numb the area to be treated with a local anesthesia. A small catheter will be inserted into the vein being treated, and the Varithena foam will be injected into the veins. The foam causes the vein to collapse, diverting the blood to nearby, healthier veins. Once all the veins are treated, you will put on a compression wrap or stocking.

What are the limitations?

Varithena allows patients to return to light activity the same day of treatment. Compression stockings must be worn for two weeks to support the treated veins and ensure proper healing. Heavy exercise must be avoided for one week.
