aECHOCARDIOGRAM
Purpose:
Ultrasound waves are used to examine the heart’s size, pumping strength, valve shape and the presence of blood flow.

Preparation:
No special preparations are necessary. Be prepared to undress from the waist up and put on a short hospital gown. The test should last approximately 30-45 min.

bLOWER EXTREMITY DOPPLER/
ANKLE BRACHIAL INDEX

Purpose:
Ultrasound waves are used to look for blockage in the leg arteries.

Preparation:
No special preparations. Be prepared to undress from the hip down.

cHOLTER MONITOR
Purpose:
Portable device used to record the electrical activity of the heart on tape.

Preparation:
No special preparation necessary. Monitor is worn for 24 hours. The monitor cannot get wet, so be sure to bathe prior.

dCAROTID ULTRASOUND
Purpose:
Ultrasound waves are used to look for the blockage in neck arteries.

Preparation:
No special preparation necessary.

eNON-NUCLEAR STRESS TEST
& STRESS ECHO TEST
Purpose:
These tests allow doctors to determine how well your heart functions when it is made to work harder. This is done by acquiring EKG and ultrasound images at time of stress in order to assess any blockage in the heart arteries.

Preparation:
Avoid eating or drinking (3) three hours prior to the test. If you are a smoker, do not smoke for at least (6) six hours prior. Do not take any beta-blockers or nitrates one day (24) hours before the test unless otherwise instructed. Wear comfortable clothing and walking shoes. The test should take approximately (30) thirty minutes. Your heart will be made to work harder when you exercise on a treadmill.

fNUCLEAR STRESS TEST
Purpose:
These tests allow doctors to determine how well your heart functions when it is made to work harder. Nuclear images of your heart at time of stress help to assess any blockage in the heart arteries.

Preparation:
Treadmill Nuclear Stress Test: Avoid eating or drinking (6) six hours prior to the test. If you are a smoker, do not smoke for at least (6) six hours prior. No caffeine for (12) twelve hours prior. Do not take any beta blockers, calcium channel blockers or nitrates one day (24hrs) before the test unless otherwise instructed. Wear comfortable clothing and walking shoes. The test will take 3-4 hours. Your heart will be made to work harder when you exercise on a treadmill or using a chemical agent if you are unable to walk rapidly on a treadmill.

Lexiscan Nuclear Stress Test: Avoid eating or drinking (6) six hours prior to the test. If you are a smoker, do not smoke for at least (6) six hours prior. No caffeine for (12) twelve hours prior. Do not take any Theophyline or Erectile Dysfunction medications (24hrs) before the test unless otherwise instructed. Wear comfortable clothing. The test will take 3-4 hours. Your heart will be made to work harder when using a chemical agent if you are unable to walk rapidly on a treadmill.

gABDOMINAL AORTIC ANEURYSM STUDY
Purpose:
This test allows doctors to measure the size of your abdominal aorta and evaluate for an abdominal aortic aneurysm.

Preparation:
Take 30 mL of Milk of Magnesium or Mylanta the night before the procedure. Do not eat or drink after midnight (NPO). If you are a smoker, do not smoke for at least six (6) hours prior to your test. Wear a comfortable 2-piece outfit (loose clothing). Please take all medication as prescribed. The test should take approximately thirty (30) minutes.

hVENOUS ULTRASOUND/VEIN MAPPING
Purpose:
This test uses ultrasound images to non-invasively evaluate the vein of the lower extremities. This can detect venous reflux and blood clots in the legs.

Preparation:
Please drink at least 4 cups of water the morning of the ultrasound. It is very important that you DO NOT WEAR compression stockings 24 hours prior to the scheduled test. Wearing the compression stockings within 24 hours prior to the test may cause invalid test results and/or cause the test to be rescheduled. This test should take approximately forty five (45) minutes. Be prepared to undress from the hip down.
