Chronic Venous Insufficiency

Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI) is a progressive medical condition that worsens over time and affects the veins and vessels in the leg that carry oxygen-poor blood back toward the heart. This causes spider veins and varicose veins, which are enlarged veins in the leg that appear like twisted, bulging cords. These patients also have heavy, painful, discolored legs from stagnation of blood flow in the leg. Patients with advanced CVI have swelling or edema of the legs and can have non-healing ulcers.

The cause of chronic venous insufficiency are leakage of small valves inside the veins causing reversal of blood flow and pooling of blood in the veins of the legs.

There are a number of factors that contribute to varicose veins and CVI, including pregnancy, heredity, and occupations with prolonged standing. It can occur in men and women of any age.
